Administration for Native Americans (ANA) Healthy Families Grant

NWI was recently awarded a three-year ANA grant to develop a healthy relationship curriculum based in Native culture.  The curriculum, Leading the Next Generations, is based on the healthy relationship work of Pam and Gordon James including their book “Coming Together in a Good Way.”  The purpose of the curriculum is to engage traditional Native teachings to address the challenges that have led to the deterioration of the Native family system and provide a much-needed resource for tribes and Native organizations nationally to more effectively promote healthier relationships, healthier marriages and healthier families within Native communities.

NWI has partnered with the National Indian Child Welfare Association who is providing the Native-specific evaluation for this project.  The curriculum development project is entering its second year where four tribes have been selected to receive training:  Blackfeet (Montana); Washoe (Nevada and California); Mt. Sanford Tribal Consortium (Alaska) and Skokomish (Washington).

The Leading the Next Generation curriculum will be available to tribal communities and organizations nationally in 2008.  For information on the project contact:
