NWI Receives Funding for Native Youth Leadership and Cultural Exchange

The Native Wellness Institute (NWI) has become a part of the Spirit Mountain Community Fund "neighborhood"! The Fund has generously awarded a one-year CHALLENGE grant in the amount of $25,000 to NWI to carry out the "Native Youth Leadership and Cultural Exchange." The Spirit Mountain Community Fund is the community foundation of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde whose goal is to make meaningful contributions to citizens in their eleven-county service area. The Native Youth Leadership and Cultural Exchange will be a partnership between the youth of Grand Ronde and youth from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. They will travel to one another's reservations and home communities to share culture, participate in leadership activities, and begin friendships that will last a lifetime. For more information, contact Jillene Joseph at 503-666-7669.

Oregon Tribes Host 6th Annual Native Caring Conference

Oregon Tribes Host 6th Annual Native Caring Conference
“This was the best conference yet!” The Native Wellness Institute coordinated and facilitated a two-day Native Caring Conference for the Oregon Tribes Native Caring Conference Committee, a fifteen member coalition of Oregon tribal elder programs. Nearly 275 attended, the largest conference in the past six years.
Participants came from Oregon and Washington tribes as well as urban areas, non-profit, State and Federal programs. Conference highlights included workshops and presentations on elders and fraud, heart disease, stress management, nutrition and fitness, personality styles and more. Entertainment included Gene Tagaban performing the Raven Dance and Robert Johnston’s hypnosis show!

Elder and family care givers were treated to several days of rest, relaxation, information and laughs! The conference was hosted by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde at the Spirit Mountain Hotel and Casino. The Confederated Tribes of Umatilla will host the 7th annual Native Caring Conference March 28 – 29, 2012 at their newly remodeled Wild Horse Resort and Casino.

Watch Robert Johnston's Hypnosis show!

"In 2005 Arlie Neskahi was asked to compose a song for the Native Wellness Institute. This song represents the work we do and is a gift for the People. Much thought and spirit went into the creation of this song and it is Arlie's wish as well as the Native Wellness Institute that you will use this song in a good way."
